Blogging 101 - 5 Tactics To Help You Win Over An Audience

It is still early in the year. Perhaps one of your New Year’s resolutions or goals is to write more. Maybe you have been promising yourself for several years that you’d finally get started on your own blog. But you’re not sure where to begin.

If writing is an art, then, blogging is one way of using words to come up with art. This is because people who are into blogging are also artists who carefully choose words to best describe their feelings, sentiments, wishes, and desires. Blogs were first introduced in the mid-1990s, as web logging. It has continued to grow and has gradually saturated the virtual community making the Internet a viable source of greater information for personal and commercial use.

Overview

To begin building your blog, all you really need is an account with blog providers, like Blogger or WordPress, to name a few. In most cases, these kinds of blogs are free of charge.

Generally, blogs are created for personal use. Like keeping a journal, people are able to write about their daily adventures, sentiments, and whatever ideas they want to express online. But with the rise of online businesses, blogs had gradually taken the limelight in providing businesses with an opportunity to boost their productivity and presence online. This is where the business blogs have come into play.

Business blogs are created basically to advertise the services or products of a certain web site, online business or brick-and-mortar business in order to increase sales. Moreover, business blogs are also one way of promoting the company so that the other readers will know that a particular company has an online presence. With blogs, entrepreneurs are able to establish a name in the virtual marketplace through the use of informative articles that can be useful in the reader’s life. From there, it is possible to make money with blogs by syndicating it to your business’ web site. This can be done through the RSS technology.

So, if you are thinking of creating a blog, whether for business or for pleasure, you need to know some basic things to help you get started and build up some interest online.

1. Consider your audience

Even if your blog is generally personal, you should still consider the minds of your readers. You have to think of something that would interest them. After all, most people who write blogs are not totally confined to their own personal interests. Most bloggers want to be “heard” (or read) and would love to be better known, even if it’s for just a few minutes. So, it is very important to write in a manner and about topics that would interest other people.

2. Pictures do speak a thousand words

To make your blogging worth the browsing effort of your readers, it is very important that you include at least one picture. This does not mean that you need to place a picture of yourself in every posting. Almost any photo will do. But, it is always helpful if it is related to the topic of the post. What you are trying to do is to get noticed, and you do this by drawing the eyes and attention of potential readers into your “story.”

Always be careful to check licenses and accreditations if the pictures you decide to use are not your own personal property. Be mindful that the images you use represent someone else’s hard work, and they should get the appropriate credit for it.

This is also another area where you need to keep your audience in mind. Know what appeals to their senses, and what they may find offensive. Yes, it’s your blog, but you want someone else to read it too. It is an old, but true adage that it takes a long time to build up a reputation, and only moments to destroy it.

3. Make your blog constructive and beneficial

Even though you are entirely free to write anything you want, what you write should still be created to be beneficial to your readers. This can be in the form of supplying some knowledge, helpful advice, a new perspective or a service. Perhaps a review of a book you read recently, or a movie.

4. Avoid making your blog multifaceted or complicated

In order to have an interesting blog, try not to overuse some highly technical terms or words. Even if the people reading your blog are not in the same “industry,” your writing should be approachable and easily digestible to almost everyone. After all, with rare exception, you are not writing a scientific discourse or debate. So make what you want or need to say plain. Stick to simple facts. Bear in mind that most people will be initially scanning rather than scrutinizing each post word for word.

5. Make your blog interactive

As much as possible and if your capacity will allow it, make your blog interactive. You can do this by placing some video or audio clips in your blog.

Place an area for comments or for some feedbacks. In this way, you can get some impressions or reactions of other people. Who knows, you might even gain some friends and a loyal following just by making them feel at home on your blog site.

Indeed, blogs are rarely created just for the mere fun of it. They should also have a purpose. So, if you want to try to harness this craft, the best way is to start writing.

13 Easy Blog Post Topic Ideas For Business Marketers

1. Do you go to trade shows? Conferences? Networking events? Other industry related events? Write a post that talks about what you did, what you saw what you learned, who you met. Give people shout-outs in the form of written praise and link love and don’t be afraid to ask for it in return. Use hashtags from your event to engage others in friendly banter and conversation. You’ll probably enjoy it. Write about your overall experience and give your honest opinions.

2. Do you have distinct competitive advantages over your competition? Leverage them. Write a blog post reviewing your product or service alongside others in your industry/space. This demonstrates transparency, and with transparency comes trustworthiness. You’ll also be including crucial keywords in your post without really thinking about it, which is great for search engine optimization (SEO).

3. Do you have expertise? Be a hipster and tell your readers about something they probably don’t know about in the form of a tip or trick. Be useful and practical. Have some fun with it, but make sure to get the point across instead of beating around the bush trying to be silly.

4. Top 10 Lists - Put yourself in Letterman’s shoes from time to time. Follow the same guidelines as idea #3. Believe it or not, your opinion matters, and people want to hear it, so express yourself! You don’t have to do a nice even number like 10 either, just do as many as you can think of.

5. Helpful Tools – Are you using a tool that has made your life easier? Tell people about it in a blog post. Be sure to let the company you’re recommending know about the article so they can promote it via social media. That’s free marketing, and as we know, small businesses love free stuff.

6. How To’s - People (potential customers in this case) are always curious about how to do things. When they want to find out, they head to the interwebs, specifically, the search engines first and use search queries that begin with “how to”. This is your chance to help your readers out and hopefully convince them that your continued expertise is worth paying for.

7. Hot Industry Topics – Being timely with your blog posts can make a huge difference. Check out trending topics in Twitter (left side of the Twitter user interface) or use Google Trends to search for topics that are relevant to your industry right now and write a post about it.

8. Answer Common FAQs – Do you ever get asked the same question over and over again by your customers? Write a blog post answering it. You can then toss a link to the blog post in your replies to folks via email and social media instead of having to repeatedly explain it. People can share that content with their networks as well.

9. Client Testimonials – Do you have delighted customer evangelists? I sure do hope so, or else you wouldn’t be in business for very long, that is unless your customers pay you to tick them off. :) Ask for testimonials from your happiest customers and create blog posts about them, quoting their praises and demonstrating how you helped then. Again, you’ll optimize the article without needing to think because you’ll be using keywords that are valuable to your business. Be honest and link to their website and social media outlets, ask them to do the same for you. Pictures of your customers evoke a sense of camaraderie and friendliness too.

10. Case Studies – Chances are, the people who love your products and services love them because they’ve helped them satisfy their needs. Write a blog post that shows exactly how specific customers have benefited by using your products and services. Use actual data points that matter to your target market. Use charts, graphs, and other visuals, like videos of your customers speaking. Give readers something to look at other than words. Case studies also allow your readers to learn more about your product or service and how it can help. That’s powerful stuff.

11. Poll Results – You have to poll and survey your customers consistently throughout the year to find out what you’re doing right, and more importantly, what you’re doing wrong. Write about the good things you find out in your polls and surveys. If you can, use larger numbers to get more “wow” factor from the reader. That’s always a plus. You can use a free service like SurveyMonkey to send out surveys via email. Facebook and LinkedIn allow you to create polls you can easily share with your networks. Get some good data and run with it in a mind-blowing blog post.

12. Video Posts – Do you own a smartphone or video camera? Start your own “how to” series on topics in your industy. Post your videos to a dedicated YouTube channel, add then to your written blog posts, and promote them via social. Use your videos in relevant “how to” posts if they’re visual. You could also do a regular section where you answer FAQs in a video like an interview or talk show. You can easily transcribe the text of the video and use that too.

13. Funny Stories – Did something funny happen to you at work today? Yesterday? This past week/month/year? Write a blog post about it! Make it about industry trends if you can. This will keep the reader focused on the topic, not your failed attempts at comedy. Comedy is based on the distinct commonality the audience and comedian have and relate to those awkward moments we all experience as humans. People appreciate tasteful, smart comedy.

10 Basic Steps To Setting Up Your Blog

1. Open A WordPress, Dripal or Blogger Blog

Do not waste your time on any of the other websites. These 3 are by far considered the best and most user friendly available. They are very simple to use, and have many free add-ons available. Most bloggers use these site, so there is plenty of help and advice available on the internet. For example, WordPress.org is self-hosted. WordPress.com is hosted (this means that your URL will have the WordPress name attached to your URL).

2. Write Your Profile And Add A Face Photograph

You must put a lot of thought into creating your profile. Use your LinkedIn profile to help you write this. Give some specific information about yourself, but do not exaggerate. Do not oversell yourself by being boastful or arrogant. Write several sentences giving the essential, but relevant, information that a reader might need to determine that you have the relevant experience to be writing about your blog’s topic. Include a nice photograph of your face.

3. Write Your Blog Posts

Your blog posts can be written about anything that you want to write about. Some post will be like a formal essay. Some will be a two sentence quick tip. But always remember, that each post must support your niche. Any information that you post on your blog must benefit your readers – your followers.

4. Keep Your Posts Short

If you are going to write a longer post, you should make it at least 400 words, but not more than 1,000 words. Each one should be about one specific topic. If your article is long than this, you should try to break it down into two posts. EzineArticles has written some great free ebooks about this that you should read. EzineArticles has written some great free ebooks about this that you should read before writing your first blog posting.

5. Add One Image To Each Post

Add a small image to each post to keep them visually appealing. This image will also be used when another blog, or blog listing service, displays your article. The image’s topic doesn’t necessarily need to be directly related to the post’s topic. But it should probably be visually attractive, or eye-catching.

6. Use Bullet Points

It is essential that you keep all of your posts easy to follow, and easy to read. No matter how serious a topic is, you must take the reader by the hand, and guide them through your article. Not only is this common courtesy, but essential if you expect your readers to continue to read your postings. By having a blog you are putting yourself out into the world, and telling people that you want to share information with them, and hopefully help them. Show them how much you care about them by truly helping them understand what you are writing about.

7. Add Header Tags And Bold Text To Each Important Heading

This will tell the search engines what is important in your article. When a search engines crawls your site, it will give a higher priority to the headings and bolded text of each section of your article. This is very easy to do when you use Any of these three platforms. It will simply be a matter of highlighting each paragraph’s header text, and then clicking on the header button and bold button.

8. Add Google AdSense Advertisements

This is very easy to do, and an easy way to make a few extra bucks from your blog. Don’t expect to make much money from this. It is simply a hands-off way to help off-set any expenses that are involved in maintaining your blog.cig you use blogger it's even easier with a basic setting in the "Earnings" drop down.

9. Promote Your Blog

You must always be open to finding new ways to promote your blog. This can be as simple as listing your blog with a “blog listing service”. Or using your “Amazon Author Page” as a way to connect with your readers. So far I have found twenty-five legitimate places to promote my blog. And this does not include the websites where I have added comments (only do this on websites and blogs that allow a link back to your blog). I consistently promote my blog posts on My Twitter, Facebook and Google+ profiles at a minimum.

10. Improve Your Blog

This is a never-ending process. You must constantly strive to make your blog look and sound like you know what you are talking about. This also includes making any corrections to your past postings. Your readers will be scrutinizing every word that you write. Be quick to admit that you made a mistake about something that you wrote about, tell them why you made that mistake, and fix it right away. The readers want to trust you, and learn from you. Make sure that you give them plenty of reasons to do this.

20 Benefits of #Blogging

It's amazing to think that only 20 years ago, blogs didn’t even exist. Today, there are over 150 million of them and the trend continues to grow. How big is the opportunity? 91% of marketers are using content marketing. Blogs generate 67% more leads per month than those who do not. Currently, 346 million people read blogs worldwide. I could go forever on the size and potential. In addition, many experts believe content marketing will be one of the top five trends in 2014.

Still, I get a lot of puzzled looks when I tell people that having a blog is the single most important thing a business, cause, or person can do to advance online. Even though ‘blogging’ has hit it big, most people don’t get what makes blogging so powerful, helpful, and beneficial.

This is the main reason why I’ve compile a list of the 20 top benefits of having a blog. If you’re among the uninitiated, prepare to be enlightened. If you’ve already started a blog of your own (as I assume many of you reading this blog have) then you can consider this an affirmation of why you do what you — and a good place to direct people who still think that a blog is pointless.

#1 A Better Job

Put simply, employers prefer to hire people with a positive online influence and blogging is the single best way to achieve that.

#2 Start a New Business

Sometimes a blog starts out as a hobby only to become a full-time business.

#3 Clients to Your Existing Business

Static websites don’t attract many new clients or customers. But a regularly updated blog can produce a constant stream of good leads from all around the world. When you publish in-depth blog posts that help potential clients/customers solve their problems, they come to trust you and respect you as an expert in the field. If they want more help than a blog post can offer, then they’re likely to be interested in hiring your business.

The only way to become a better writer is to write – pages and pages, day after day.
Of course, that’s exactly what an active blogger spends his or her time doing. The more you blog, the more you write – and the better writer you become.

#5 Become a Published Author

The publishing business isn’t what it used to be and publishers are less likely than ever before to take a chance on an unknown author. They would much rather give a contract to an author with a built-in audience of readers – and that’s where having a blog comes in. So keeping a blog isn’t just a good way to become a better writer, it may be your fastest path to becoming a published writer.

#6 Immediate Feedback

An author has to wait months between finishing his/her book and reading the reviews, but bloggers get to read their readers’ comments the same day they click ‘publish’. This makes blogging a great way to get feedback on an idea that you want to develop further. Having an outside perspective and a little bit of constructive criticism is invaluable.

#7 Learn More About a Group of People

Bloggers spend most of their time sharing their ideas and insights with their readers. But if you listen, you’ll find that your readers share a lot with you too.
I learn a lot about the readers on Digecomm from your comments, your tweets, and your posts. That information helps me to know what type of posts to write and I know that it also helps determine what products to develop that will help readers the most. Knowing about your audience is invaluable (this is why companies spend so much time and money testing out their products in focus groups). As a blogger, achieving this type of insight is a natural byproduct of your day-to-day routine.

#8 Gain Influence

What’s the best way to change the world? You could become a politican, activist, or volunteer.
Or you could become a blogger. A successful blogger gains a wide audience of people who trust and respect them.

#9 Become A Trusted Expert in Your Field

Anybody can start a blog on any subject they like. I prefer all things digital and/or social media. So you don’t get a lot of respect just for saying, “I have a website about that.”
But over time, as you write more posts and share more of your expertise, you’re website will change from ‘just another blog’ into a powerful demonstration of your knowledge in a field. When somebody visits your site and sees the insights you’ve shared on a subject, along with the community of people who respect and seek that insight, it will be clear that you’re genuinely an expert in the field.
Being an expert is a good thing. You may get consideration for careers, awards, or consulting opportunities. It works, I've amassed 21K engaged followers on Twitter alone. One you target content, you get a targeted audience.

#10 Build a Network

Starting a blog is a guaranteed way to expand your network. I've made so many lifelong connections that would have never transpired had it not been for the power of social media. Thanks Facebook, Twitter, etc.! First of all, valuable and interesting blog posts attract readers who will then comment on your site and send you personal messages through your contact page. Many of your readers will be asking for help, but others will be looking to help you. A blog is also a good platform for reaching out to others. Many of the first posts on Income Diary were interviews with experts in the ‘make money online’ community.

#11 Learn In-Demand Skills

Easy-to-use blogging platforms like WordPress or Drupal have made it so that a person doesn’t need to have a grasp of computer programming in order to start a blog. But through the process of blogging, most people learn some HTML and CSS simply because it’s easier to make minor improvements to your site by yourself than it is to hire somebody each time. That’s good news because fluency in web design, HTML, and CSS are highly valued skills in this day and age.
The same can be said for a whole slew of other blog-related skills, such as graphic design, search engine optimization, content marketing, and social media marketing.

#12 Improve SEO

Ultimately, search engines want to deliver results that are helpful to their users. When you write a series of in-depth, valuable articles around a topic, Google takes notice - especially if you're active on Google+. Each high-quality blog post that you publish is another opportunity to get traffic from search. In the near future I also predict that posts and tweets, respectively, on Facebook and Twitter will soon be part of the algorithm of search engines like Google and Bing. It's almost detrimental to your business to start "cracking the code" on better engagement and influence in social media.

#13 Data Collection (e.g. Email)

There’s a lot of talk about social media today, but email is still the most reliable way to communicate online. People check their email regularly, it's a far richer experience and they’re used to receiving important updates. Getting somebody to give you their primary email isn’t easy, but once you have it you have a direct connection with that person. You’ll then be able to get their attention whenever you find something that you think will benefit them or if there’s something important regarding your business or blog that you want to inform them about.

#14 Maintain Knowledge in Your Field

If you’re looking for an incentive to keep up to date on all of the latest information on a certain subject, starting a blog is a great start. Your weekly quest to put up new content will lead you to always be searching for new information and sharing it with your readers. Remember, the digital landscape changes almost monthly these days, you might be an expert today, but if you don't keep up with the changes you'll quickly find yourself obsolete.

#15 Ecommerce

A blog can make for a great virtual store and other bloggers have found success selling everything from e-books to membership sites.

#16 Connections With Great Leaders

Getting to "sit down and talk" with experts in your area is now a reality.  If I didn’t had a blog, I truly doubt I would have had the online credibility to take the time and sit down and talk with such prolific leaders in the social media space.

#17 Expression

This one’s pretty simple: a blog is an expressive medium that can contain words, images, and sounds. Whether your blog is formal business affair or a personal “what-I-ate-for-breakfast-this-morning” diary, blogging is powerful form of self-expression.

#18 Help Others

Every good blog helps its readers. Income Diary does this by offering free information about how to make money online. Other blogs help people lose weight, raise their kids, and come to terms with life-threatening disease. Yet others mobilize groups of people to take action and raise money for important causes. The power of a blog to educate, inspire, and bring like-minded people together makes blogging a great way to help people.

#19 Build Trust

Trust is a rare and valuable commodity online. You can’t buy trust. It has to be earned by demonstrating your commitment to your readers, time and time again. As it turns out, that’s exactly what good bloggers do by regularly posting valuable, honest articles on their blogs. The more people whose trust you’ve earned, the easier it will be to accomplish your goals online.

#20 Identity Control

Whether you’re a person or business, there’s probably lots of information about you online. When somebody searches for you online, you want to make sure that they get an accurate and complete picture of who you are and what you’re all about. Starting a blog that covers all the bases is a great way to control your online identity and make sure that the top result on Google makes a the right first impression.

How To Write A Blog Everyone Will Want To Share

Did you know that 65% of B2B companies are using blogs to grow their business? Content marketing is fast becoming the preferred method for businesses to share their knowledge, strengthen their brand, and secure their positions as thought leaders in an industry. Blogging, done correctly, is central to an effective content marketing strategy. In this post, we’ll discuss some of the best practices to make sure your blog is pulling its weight and spreading your company’s message.

Catchy Blog Titles

The first step to writing a blog that people want to read is writing a catchy title that will demand attention. Just as you may struggle with an email subject line, a blog title needs to be short and sweet and peak the reader’s interest enough to click through. There are a number of ways to do this depending on the type of blog you’re publishing. In the case of this post, we’re trying to teach you something new. As such, we started the title with “How To…” You can also include phrases such as “Tips and Tricks”, “Best Practice”, or “Top 10 Ways To…”

Another option is to create a list. Numbers catch people’s attention and can easily be combined with the instructional titles mentioned above.

Pretty Pictures

We may not be 6 years old and reading picture books anymore, but let’s face it, pretty pictures make anything more appealing. Using featured pictures and images can differentiate your content from similar posts and helps to create a visually memorable experience. This blog by Facebook expert Jon Loomer is a great example of how to use images to enhance your text. In a bid to create a memorable experience, try to stay away from stock images…nothing about a stock image is memorable, other than the message that you’re team isn’t overly creative.

Additionally, be mindful that you have the legal rights to your images. Just because you found an image on Google doesn’t mean its fair game. Buying an image license will always be cheaper than a lawsuit.

SEO is critical

You can’t be a marketer without a basic understanding of SEO. You may not need to understand it 100% but you do need to know how to write a blog that is optimized for SEO. If you’re blog is on WordPress, take advantage of plugins such as Yoast that guide you in writing an optimized post. Here are some basic tips to get you started:

Make sure your keyword gets traffic but doesn’t have a lot of competition

Include your keyword in the beginning of your blog title, URL, title tags, meta data, and multiple times in your article

Write at least 300 words, preferably closer to 500

Have approximately 1 SEO friendly hyperlink for every 120 words

Use blog tags judiciously – tags help but adding too many similar tags can negatively affect your rank

Link To Related Content

Effective linking has multiple benefits and should never be disregarded. For one, it shows you know how to curate content and find the best information on the web. It also let’s you direct your traffic to older posts so that you don’t have to discuss the same ideas over and over again.

Additionally, the SEO benefits are many. Moz.com’s beginners guide to SEO explains how linking is done and why that matters to you:

“For search engines that crawl the web, links are the streets between pages. Using sophisticated link analysis, the engines can discover how pages are related to each other and in what ways.”

Linking out helps connect your blog to other pages. Additionally, as people see you are linking to them, they will in turn link to you. The more links to your site, they better ranking you’ll get.

Make it Easy to Share

If you want people to share your blog, make it easy to share. Use social sharing buttons so people can easily spread your awesome content on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google+, Reddit, and the countless other social networking sites out there. You’ve spent the time to create a great post, so make sure your readers can spread the love!
